Views of Locke

Locke from the southeast (dated 1926, but likely taken earlier)

Citizen's Bank about the time it opened in 1913.  The men on the steps are likely the founding officers of the bank, including Sen. Charles J. Hewitt (see back).

Main Street in Locke about 1915. For those who aren't old enough to remember the bank building, it sat at the northwest corner of Rts 38 and Rt 90.  The 1975 fire started after a gasoline tanker lost control coming down the Rt 90 hill and smashed into the bank. (see back)

Close-up view of Main Street in Locke about 1915.  All four of the buildings on the left were destroyed in 1975, the farthest building being the Post Office.  It was a store at the time of this picture.

Ruins after the 1912 fire.  Looking south along main street from in front of Ron Sampson's store.

Train wreck, near the Maple Ave. crossing.  No one was injured but 12 cars loaded with coal and lead broke away from the rest of the north bound freight train and derailed at about 9 PM on April 20, 1917, leaving a mess that took all night and most of the next day to clean up.

Main Street looking south early 1900s.  Looking SW from intersection with West Hill/Erron Hill Rd. Main Street looking north early 1900s. Looking NE from intersection with West Hill/Erron Hill Rd. Home of Mrs Charles Fuller on the right. East side of South Main Street early 1900s.  The chimney at the back of the Fountain House Hotel was the origin of a fire on April 27, 1912 that destroyed about one third of the village. West side of Main Street 1900s. Odd Fellows Hall and Post Office were both in the same building in the early 1900s. Post Office later moved to the smaller house to the north (across from "Mead Street").

Churches ~1910.  Baptist Church from the southwest and Methodist Church from the east.  The Methodist Church was destroyed during the 1912 fire (see back). Post Office 1972. The post office, auction house, Rene's diner, Alvord's garage and Bank were destroyed by fire, April 10, 1975. Main Street 1975.  Looking north from the Baptist Church.

Locke Gulf 1975. Near former LAMCO factory and Giles Lumber on Rt 90 between Genoa and Locke.
