Congregational Church



The
Congregational Church was built in 1823.
Now the Christ United Methodist Church, it is located at the southwest corner of Church and Park
streets.

St. Matthew's Episcopal Church
Three successive buildings have been located on the same site
on the south side of Church Street between Main and Allen. The first church
was opened about 1824 but burned in 1842.


About 1897
The second building opened in 1843 and was used until 1897 when it
was replaced by the present building. The town clock was installed in 1856
at a cost of $212. It was moved in 1897 to
Firemans' Hall.

First Methodist Church

Before 1934
The Methodist Episcopal Church (later Christ United Methodist Church) was
located on the northwest corner of Church and Smith streets.
First built in 1872, it was severely damaged by fire in March 1934 but was
renovated and reopened by October 1934.

Christmas 1974
Although continuously used up through the late 1980's, it eventually was
razed due to structural damage that would have been too costly to repair.

First Baptist Church

The First
Baptist Church is located at the northwest corner of Church and William streets.
The sanctuary was built in 1875. The front entrance and tower were
added in 1891. |
St. Patrick's
Catholic Church

St.
Patrick's church is located on Grove Street between Walnut and Aurora
Streets. The cornerstone for the current church was laid in 1884. |
