Year: 1952  Location: 164-138 Main

East side of Main Street from just north of the creek looking northeast, 1952.  From right: Small building (likely vacant), 1st National Bank of Moravia, Burgess Clothing, Bement Electric (appliances), R.W. Hawley & Co. Druggist, Grand Union.

The Small building housed Fred Small's Hardware (under various partnerships) from about 1896 until the mid-1940's.  The Crescent Corset Co. subsidiary of the J.C. Penney Company opened its Moravia shop in the Small building in 1943.  Needing room for expansion, it relocated in 1951 to the 3rd floor of the Union Block above Wade's furniture store, where it remained until the late 1960's when it moved to West Cayuga Street.  The Moravia Crescent shop closed for good on December 14, 1978.  George Neville was the Plant Manager for 35 years.  The Small building was razed in the early 1960's as part of an expansion of the bank.
