A gas station replaced the Moravia House Hotel around 1930. Vincent Emperor and later A.F. McFaul were among the early
gas station operators. Reginald Hopkins and Alex McFaul
(son of A.F. McFaul) took over the business in December 1939. Joseph
"Hap" Hopkins (no relation to Reginald) ran the station from the 1940s until
he retired in the early 1970s.
Clarence Brown, Sr. had operated an ice cream and candy business
for many years in the north side of the
Hoyt (or
Black) Block, later operated by Govey Hughes (at one time with Fred
Strong), then by Fred Byrd. He opened the bowling alley, featuring
four high-quality lanes, in the Everson Building in November 1940.
Mayor Robert Strom rolled the first ball at the grand opening. |
