Year: 1952 Location: 127-129 Main
West Side of Main St. looking just north of the Mill Creek Bridge
1952. L-R: bridge, Modern Market, L.P. Hughes Moravia Five and Ten
(formerly Spaulding's), Joe Fiorelle's Drug Store (later Cawley's). The
buildings north of the bridge burned Dec. 30, 1966.
Paul Rowe, "the store with both meats and groceries," and C. Wallace Rodee,
"use your 'sense' and save your cents," combined forces and opened Modern
Markets "the store that has everything," on May 25, 1940. The new store featured a way
of shopping that was revolutionary for Moravia at the time: "market
baskets on roller carriers will be furnished the customers and they will
have the privilege of selecting their own groceries." Other new
features included marking prices on every article for sale and a "modern
cash register that adds all sales purchased by customers and gives a slip
with each article listed." They also boasted modern meat coolers and
"an experienced meat cutter from Auburn" who has had "years of experience in
city markets." A number of other merchants (not including the other
grocers) welcomed the new business in a full page of advertisements in the
Republican Register.
Wallace And Evelyn Rodee also had a passion for horses, and
were widely known for their champion Morgans. Not only were the Rodees
a fixture in Moravia and other area parades, they traveled throughout the
state and beyond, showing their horses and bringing home many ribbons and
trophies. Please see the New York Morgan Horse Society (NYSMHS) for a
profile and tribute to
the Ev and Wally Rodee and their horses. |
