The following has been transcribed from a booklet
by Mrs. Leman Hunter of Cleveland, OH, published in 1914. It is of
particular local interest because Ezekiel Sayles is generally known as the first
settler of Sempronius following the Revolution and many people in the area can
trace their roots to the Sayles family. Leslie L. Luther refers to it in his
notes as "The Little Sayles Book".
Also of note is that as families grew and
Sempronius became "civilized", some offspring of the original Sempronius
families moved on to other parts. There is a particular link to Huron and
Erie Counties in Ohio, also known as "The Firelands", that deserves further
research.
GENEALOGY OF THE SAYLES
FAMILY
Compiled in the year 1914, by Eliza Schaeffer
Hunter.
Ezekiel SAYLES came from Stillwater, Saratoga County N.Y. to
what is now the town of Sempronius, Cayuga County, N.Y., in 1793 and settled
where what many years afterwards became Sayles Corners, and such it remains
today.
He purchased a tract of land from one, Judge THOMPSON of
Saratoga, it was only a vast wilderness, far from any settlement of white
people. It was six years later (1799), that the county and town were organized
and named
He was the first white settler, and erected the first house,
a log structure, in the town. He was wise in the choice of location which was
near some fine springs of soft water from which flowed a considerable stream;
both are flowing today, though in much less volume.
Other settlements had been made in other parts of the town
which was ten miles square. The first town meeting, for the election of town
officers was held at Mr. SAYLES house, it being the most central location, and
they were held there for several years afterwards.
At the first town meeting, Mr. SAYLES was chosen Town Clerk,
and was annually chosen to the office for twenty two years. He also held offices
for long terms, and a remarkable fact, showing his conceded ability, is that at
one time he was the incumbent of six town offices: Town Clerk, Justice of the
Peace, Assessor, Commissioner of Roads, Commissioner of Public Lands, and Pound
Master. He was also a surveyor, and did much work in that line in all parts of
the town. I have no means of knowing the date of his birth, but he died on the
old homestead about 1828; neither do I know whom be married or when, but from
this union there were eleven children: Ahab SAYLES, David SAYLES, Ezekiel
SAYLES, Jr., Benjamin SAYLES and seven daughter’s, Phoebe SAYLES, married Eri
TAYLOR; Eleanor SAYLES, married John TITUS, Anna SAYLES, married Ebenezer
WOOSTER, Jemima SAYLES, married Nathaniel PALMER, Amy SAYLES, married Ira ROOKS,
Lydia SAYLES, married Orrin WILLIS, and Sarah SAYLES, weak minded never married.
Ahab SAYLES went to Michigan in an early day, and I have not
been able to get any information of them; although I wrote Merrit SAYLES,
supposed to be a descendant of Ahab SAYLES. There were three brothers settled in
township of Keene, Mich. One had a family of fifteen children, which grew to be
men and women.
David SAYLES had six sons: John B. SAYLES, Cornelius SAYLES;
Charles SAYLES, David SAYLES, Lemuel A. SAYLES, and Lorenzo Dow SAYLES; one
daughter, Betsy SAYLES who married Hiram KENYON.
Lorenzo Dow SAYLES, son of David SAYLES, born March 21st,
1814, married Margaretta PULTZ, August 26th, 1841, and died March 16th, 1896.
His wife still lives at Moravia at the age of ninety-two.
One child, Mary Ellen SAYLES, born Jan. 8th, 1843. Married
Dwight Cheney BROWN, Dec. 1st, 1863. Two children born to this union. Fred
Sayles BROWN born Aug. 21st, 1867. Died Sept. 13th, 1875. Jessie May BROWN born
Jan. 12th, 1879.
Jessie May BROWN, daughter of Dwight & Ellen BROWN, married
Lewis Smith CARR, June 20th, 1912.
Lemuel SAYLES had two sons, George SAYLES and Lewis SAYLES,
they are now somewhere in the West. Cornelius, one son, William SAYLES now in
Pennsylvania.
Ezekiel SAYLES, Jr., was born at Sempronius, N.Y., Cayuga
County. He married Anstrus FOSTER, at Sempronius about 1799. He succeeded to
much of the estate of his father, and at the marriage of his oldest daughter, Sally SAYLES, she was given 25 acres of land, and her husband, Knight SPRINGER,
bought 25 acres adjoining. They increased this by purchase to 114 acres. The old
Sayles homestead at Sayles Corners was sold to George SPRINGER, (Uncle to Knight
SPRINGER), who came from Rensselaer County, N.Y. Several years later Knight
SPRINGER came possessed of this old homestead; also Benjamin SAYLES had a
portion of the original estate, but more than forty years ago it all passed into
other hands, and none of the SAYLES kindred are living in that vicinity.
Ezekiel SAYLES, Jr., and family, except oldest daughter, left
this county in 1832, and located near Berlin Heights, Huron County (now Erie
County), Ohio, and is now known as West Berlin. He practiced medicine for
several years, and later located in Wood County, Ohio. His wife passed away in
1843, and he went to live with his son Alfred SAYLES, in Portland, Mich., until
he died.
Anstrus FOSTER, wife of Ezekiel SAYLES, Jr. was born in Rhode
Island. She had a brother, David H. FOSTER, living in Sempronius. He had two
sons and two daughters; -- David H. FOSTER, Jr. married Polly MATTON;

OBITUARY.
Sally SAYLES Springer, surviving her late husband, Mr. Knight
SPRINGER, scarcely more than one brief year, died at her residence at Sempronius
on Saturday, Mch. 21st, 1874 after a painful illness of about six weeks, a
violent attack of pneumonia terminated in quick consumption, placing her beyond
the reach of medical skill. Her sickness was attended with great pain and
suffering, which she bore throughout with uncommon Christian fortitude, finally
passing calmly, peacefully and willingly to her spiritual home. Her maiden name
was Sayles, and her father Ezekiel SAYLES was one of the first settlers in, the
town of Sempronius at what has ever since been known as Sayles Corners. Near
this spot, she was born Dec. 2nd, 1801, and within sight of which she had always
lived untiil[sic] four years ago her husband sold his property there and moved
to the village of Sempronius. Never blessed with children of her own, yet her
home had been that of the orphan almost continually for nearly fifty years. In
her early childhood she came to us as a mother fostering and regarding us and
our little sister with a true maternal care. Her kindness of heart, and parental
instruction at that tender age we have learned in after years to treasure with
the most reverential gratitude. Early in life she embraced the Christian
religion, and united with the Baptist church, of which she was a member at the
time of her death. She will he remembered by those who knew her as a kind
hearted benevolent simpathetic[sic] Christian woman. The funeral was attended at
the Baptist church in Sempronius on Monday, and a discourse delivered by Rev.
A.W. COON of Scott from the following text. "If a man die shall he live again."
Signed, M.E. KENYON2.

Lydia SPRINGER of Berlinville, Ohio, aged 63 years.
Again we are reminded of the uncertainties of this life in
the sudden death of Mrs. Lydia SPRINGER, which occured at the home of her
sister, Mrs. Sally SPRINGER. Only the week before on Monday, at a moment’s
notice she left her home in Ohio in company with her brother, Mr. David SAYLES,
of Milan, Ohio, and hastened to the home and the bedside of her sick and
languishing sister, whom she hardly expected to find alive on her arrival. She
left her home in usual health and arrived at her sisters on Tuesday, hoping to
remain until the former should be restored to health again, but alas, on the
Sunday morning following she was seriously attacked with acute pneumonia, which
continued to increase in intensity in spite of the skill of her physician, until
it terminated her life on Friday. Just two weeks from the day she landed from
the cars in the village, she started on her return by the same, a lifeless
corpse. She was mother of Dwight SPRINGER, of Summer Hill, and cousin of L. D.
SAYLES, and David H. FOSTER.
