| The Star
Class was a Girls Sunday School class in the Sempronius Baptist Church, lead
by Mrs. Harriet Rynders. It started out with nine members sometime
around 1907 or 1908 and over the next 10 years included about 30 members.
In addition to teaching the Star Class, Mrs. Rynders was superintendent of
the Sunday School as well as the church organist. With her daughters Mabel,
who played piano, and Adelaide, who played the violin, the Rynders family
helped instill a love for music in a generation of None Such Folks.
Starting
in 1922, the former members of the Star Class started a tradition of holding
an annual picnic, the first one held at the home of their beloved
teacher. Mrs. Rynders continued to attend the annual gatherings until
just prior to her death in 1946. The annual reunions continued with
Mrs. Rynders present in spirit for many more years. The 63rd and final
reunion was held in 1985 with five members and one guest. As
of 2004 there is believed to be just one surviving member of the group.
