10 March 2007
Update
-
Added a nice picture
of
Moravia's first fire truck with some of its history. This is located
in the
Research & Features
section.
-
The addition of about
20 high quality pictures of Moravia's Business District from 1939 to 1952 has
brought this section to a point of critical mass where there are now views of just
about every building - in several cases views from multiple angles. The
Moravia
Business District page has been completely reorganized to allow you
to aimlessly wander around Main street. An overview map is included so that
you can pick a spot to start (you might want to print the map out - each picture
now includes street numbers so you can figure out what you are looking at).
For those of you who are afraid you might miss something, you can also go to a
master list of the pictures - the color of the text will indicate which ones
you have already looked at. You also might want to look at a
satellite view of Moravia today (from Google Maps).
-
In addition, about 25
other postcards and pictures have been added to the
Moravia Village,
Sylvan
Lake/Montville,
Fillmore Glen,
Glen Haven,
Locke,
Owasco Lake, Genoa and
Sherwood (see Points West),
and Groton (under
Tompkins County). Be sure to send feedback if you can help identify
the two "mystery" photos: one says "Punch
Bowl Falls, Moravia, NY [3/11 this mystery has been resolved], the other is of a mill that says "Brown
& Springer".
-
The
People section has
been updated to the latest version of software from The Next Generation of
Genealogy Sitebuilding. The biggest thing you will notice is a series
of drop-down menus in the upper right of the screen that let you navigate to
various features. Not all of these are in use yet. I'll start adding
some "tips and tricks" for the People section in the near future.
-
About 100
People added and 200 more updated since September.
-
As a
convenience for those of you who either don't live in the area or are too lazy
to look out your window (like me), I've added an
Owasco Valley Weather Cam
that periodically uploads pictures looking across Fillmore Glen towards Owasco
Lake.

Update
17 Sept 2006 Update
-
Updated the front page
showing a Rockwellian view of main street in
Moravia. The policeman is George Shimer. The buildings in the
foreground burned down in 1966.
-
To wrap up the fair
season for this summer, I've added a panoramic view of a fair held in Summerhill
in Sept 1900 to the Parades, Fairs and Other Events
page. Also included is a booklet advertising "premiums" (prizes) for the
upcoming Sept 1899 Summerhill Fair. In addition, I've added a program from
a fair held by the Kelloggsville Odd Fellows in December 1899.
-
About 18 interesting
pictures and post cards have been added to the
Surroundings pages including panoramic views of
Moravia and Locke.
-
Over 500 People
added and about 200 more updated including the following families - Bush,
Call, Colwell, Cutler, Mason, McCall, McSherry, Prine, Spoor, Tuthill, Youngs and others.
-
You can no longer just
click on updates or feedback/info links to send me an email. To hopefully
cut down on spam, you will now need to type the address in your email program.
[NOTE as of Jan 2007, there is a Feedback/Comments form for this instead]
2 July 2006 Update
-
Updated the front page
showing a patriotic float from a Moravia parade in the early 1920s. Click
on the photo to go to a new page for various
Parades, Fairs and
Other Events (this can also be accessed from
Research & Features).
-
Added the
1928-29 Moravia
High School Handbook to the
School Yearbooks
page. Not exactly a yearbook, but it includes a few photos.
-
Made major
improvements to the Site
Search page and included some examples. I'm open to suggestions to
make this easier.
-
Just under 400 People
added and about 150 more updated including the following families - Burgess,
Crandall, Cruthers, Knight, Mason, Morehouse, Sincerbeaux/Sincerbox, Sinclair,
Stoker and others.
-
Redesigned the People
home page to make it (hopefully) easier to use and moved the list of families to
a new Family Navigator
page. In the process, the list of families more than doubled with the addition
of Burgess, Clark (3 lines), Collier, Conklin (2 lines), Crandall, Fitts,
Foster, Hardy, Hawley, Johnson, Lester, McConnell, Morse, Palmer, Phillips,
Reynolds (2 lines) Ripley, Smith, Stoker, Tidd, Van Schaick and Vosburgh.
-
Launched a new feature
in the People section for browsing
Cemeteries and Headstones.
So far I've uploaded 335 headstone photos, mostly from the
Kelloggsville Cemetery (about 40% of the total) with many more to come.
-
With special thanks to
Ruth Norman, I've posted a fascinating article titled
Fred Collier
and time in Sempronius, 1931-1933, written by Ruth's mother Arlene (Nelty)
Norman about her memories of her step-father, Fred Collier, and Sempronius in
the early 1930s. Ruth also sent several pictures of Fred and his family.
I've interspersed some of the photos in the article and the remainder in the
People Photos section.
29 May 2006 Update
-
Updated the front page
with two air view photos of Moravia. The first one was taken sometime
between 1951 when the High School was completed and 1962 when the Elementary
School was started. The second one was taken in September 2005.
-
Added an interesting
1920 newspaper article to the Research & Features
page about the percentage of older people living in Moravia.
-
Also added images of
the 1914 Moravia High School Yearbook - more are
on the way.
-
250 People
added and about 175 updated including the following families - Foster, Horton,
Huff, Jayne, Joslin, Nettleton, Oliver, Rathburn/Rathbone, Sayles, Tuthill,
Wade, Ward, and others.
-
A couple of months ago
I posted two photos (click here and
here) showing a number of men and a snowplow in
deep snow on the front page. When I showed them to Clara Mitchell, she
knew right away what they were about. The pictures were taken on Hathaway
Road in Sempronius in 1945. Everyone was helping clear the roads to get to
the Becker place, where Ed Becker had been killed in a farm accident.
23 April 2006 Update
-
Updated the front page
photo. I'm hoping a car buff can figure out
what kind of car this is. I believe it might be a Russell, which I think was a
Canadian outfit eventually taken over by Willys.
-
Added
Morse Family
Births-Marriages-Deaths to the Research & Features Page.
-
275 People
added and about 175 updated including the following families - Brown, Clark,
Conklin, Covey, Donald, Doty, Lester, Mead, Morse, Powers, Rosecrans, Springer,
Tidd and others.
-
28 new photos added to the People section including Springer family
(courtesy of Thor Springer), Lester family, Morse/Atkins family (courtesy of
Thomas R. Morse) and various vintage Moravia School class photos.
26 March 2006 Update
-
Updated the front page
photo.
-
Added a 41 new
postcards and photos to
Surroundings:
Moravia Business District, Moravia Village, Moravia Churches (new), Sylvan Lake,
Fillmore Glen, Skaneateles Lake, Auburn and Tompkins County. Many of these
are unique and surprising.
-
56 People
added and about 160 updated including the following families - Foster, Hardy,
Hawley and Eaton.
-
Please follow the link
to read about Chris
Atwood's upcoming race around Lake Tahoe.
5 February 2006 Update
-
Marriage Notices and
Death Notices published in the Moravia Valley
Register for the year 1874. Includes images of the articles.
-
About 50 new postcards
and photos added to
Surroundings in the
Moravia, Auburn, Owasco Lake, Points West, Cortland County, Glen Haven,
Skaneateles and Tompkins County sections.
-
14 new photos added to the People section including pupils attending the
Pine Hollow School in Genoa in 1899 and 1930.
-
Nearly 675 People
added and many more updated including the following families - Albro, Anthony,
Banks, Bush, Collier, Eaton, Erb, Parsell, Sharpe, Smith, Vosburgh, Waters and
Wattles.
2 January 2006 Update
-
I've added an item
called Sempronius
Farms 1904 to the Research & Features page.
It's a transcription of the Sempronius section found toward the back of the 1904
Cayuga County Atlas "A Record of Some
of the Most Valuable and Productive Farms of Cayuga County, New
York." I included numerous links to the People pages and Maps. This
is still a work in progress: although the text is finished, I'm still
researching some of the farm owners and their families.
-
Over 50 new postcards
and photos added to various sections of
Surroundings (many
courtesy of Bill Hecht's website). I've added new pages for
Fillmore Glen,
Glen Haven and
Niles.
-
I found a great story
of a hike through what is now Fillmore Glen in an 1874 issue of the Moravia
Valley Register (predecessor to the Moravia Republican Register). See the
Fillmore Glen
page.
-
I found a page from an
old Spalding sports guide with a picture of the
1911/1912
Moravia High School Basketball Team. The Canastota High team is on the
same page but there is no other contextual information to explain why they were
included. From what I've been able to find from news clippings, Moravia
did quite well that year. To be continued...
-
5
photos added to the People section including a great picture of the
Fitts
twins.
-
Nearly 500 People
added and many more updated including the following families - Andrews, Fitts,
Hathaway, Sherman, Sovocool, Springer, Westfall, Whiting and Wilson.
